Middlesbrough want to appoint Tony Pulis as their new manager after sacking Garry Monk yesterday.

Monk was dismissed shortly after the 2-1 victory away to Sheffield Wednesday, which left the club ninth in the Championship. The Telegraph understands that Pulis, who was sacked by West Brom last month, is the first choice of Middlesbrough owner Steve Gibson. Pulis has also been linked with the vacancy at Swansea City.

Monk has been replaced in the interim by academy director Craig Liddle. The sacking may have come as a surprise to Monk, who described the performance yesterday as his side’s best away from home this season.

Boro went behind to Ross Wallace’s 30th-minute opener but fought back through strikes from Jonny Howson and Grant Leadbitter.

Ivan Cavaleiro grabbed the goal with a low shot from the edge of the box. “It was a tough game,” Wolves head coach Nuno Espirito Santo said. “Ipswich press hard all over the pitch and it is hard to play against. We have seen that teams are trying to adapt to us and we have to find solutions.

“We don’t look at the table. We look at how we want to continue and pro- ceed and be persistent in our work. It is a good moment for us so let’s enjoy it.”

Cardiff manager Neil Warnock said: “With the penalty, it’s hit his hand and we’ve no complaints about that – but deliberate handball? Come on! You know when it’s a penalty and they were really fortunate to get that.” drew 2-2 at home to

and slugged out an entertaining 1-1 draw that did little to advance the survival prospects of either.

Visitors Birmingham remain bottom of the Championship after stretching their wait for an away win towards eight months, and the outcome was not much healthier for the hosts.

Chris Coleman’s Sunderland dropped back into the relegation zone after failing to take advantage of a numerical advantage for the final quarter of an, at times, ridiculously open encounter, after Sam Gallagher, scorer of his side’s goal, earned the second of two harsh yellow cards. “They are the two softest bookings you’ll ever see in your life,” Birmingham manager Steve Cotterill said after his team earned only a third point on the road this season. “If this game was at St Andrew’s then he doesn’t get booked, and his sending-off has tipped the balance for me.” Lewis Grabban scored the equaliser.
