England Women suffered a 57-run defeat by Australia in the final of the Tri-Nation T20 series in India as their run of poor results continued. Chasing Australia’s 209 for four, a record score for women’s T20 internationals, England never recovered from the double early losses of Bryony Smith and Tammy Beaumont for ducks and ended on 152 for nine.
Zimbabwe men’s coach Heath Streak said he was shocked after Zimbabwe Cricket sacked him in a backroom clear-out in the wake of the team’s failure to qualify for the 2019 World Cup.
Football
Darron Gibson has left Sunderland by mutual consent after being charged with drink-driving. The 30-year-old Republic of Ireland international was suspended after being arrested and subsequently charged following an incident close to the club’s training ground on March 17.
Rugby Union
Keith Murdoch, who was the first All Black to be sent home from a tour for indiscipline when he departed Wales in 1972, and went on to live a mysterious life in the Australian Outback, has died aged 74.
Boxing
Former British and Commonwealth champion Chris Edwards has died aged 41. Stoke-born Edwards fought at flyweight and super-flyweight, winning 17, losing 15 and drawing four of his 36 fights. Edwards’s former manager Mick Carney said he was “a boxing legend”.
