Wigan secure promotion

Wigan secured promotion back to the Championship with a 4-0 win at Fleetwood. Third-placed Shrewsbury could only manage a 1-1 draw at home against relegated Bury, to all but end their hopes of finishing in the top two. Wigan went in front in the 33rd minute through midfielder Max Power, before Gavin Massey fired in a fine individual effort in the 37th. Defender Dan Burn made it 3-0 with a low finish in the 57th minute, with Cheyenne Dunkley adding a fourth from close range as Paul Cook’s side delivered promotion in style.

Luton seal League One return

Luton sealed promotion from League Two and put the brakes on Accrington’s title party after coming from behind to draw at Carlisle. After an hour’s play Stanley were on course to go up as champions, well on the way to a handsome 4-0 win at third-placed Wycombe while the Hatters trailed to Danny Grainger’s first-half penalty. But Oliver Lee hit back with the all-important equaliser, sending Luton into League One for the first time in a decade after relegation in 2008.

Salford into National League

Salford, owned by former Manchester United players Gary Neville, Ryan Giggs, Phil Neville, Paul Scholes and Nicky Butt, sealed promotion to Vanarama National League despite a 2-1 defeat at home to Boston. The Ammies required just a point to be crowned National League North champions but were celebrating nonetheless given second-placed Harrogate’s 3-1 defeat at Bradford Park Avenue. “Champions, Salford City Football Club, three promotions in four years, unbelievable achievement,” tweeted Gary Neville afterwards.

Barcelona win Copa del Rey

Barcelona won their fourth successive Copa del Rey with a 5-0 thrashing of Sevilla as departing hero Andres Iniesta got on the scoresheet. Luis Suarez netted twice in the first half, Lionel Messi grabbed his 40th of the season and Philippe Coutinho marked his first final for the club with a successful penalty, but it was a rare strike from Iniesta- who is set to leave at the end of the season - which drew the loudest cheers in a one-sided romp at the Wanda Metropolitano.
