Grigg fires Wigan to title with superb solo strike

-

Will Grigg secured the League One title for Wigan Athletic by scoring the decisive goal in his side’s 1-0 victory over Doncaster Rovers yesterday.

The Northern Ireland striker delighted the visiting fans – and rewarded manager Paul Cook for a fine campaign – by cooly finishing his superb run into the penalty area. It was his 26th goal of the season.

The triumph ensured Wigan finished above Blackburn Rovers, who were forced to settle for the second automatic promotion spot despite a 2-1 win over Oxford United. Darragh Lenihan and Jack Payne scored either side of half-time for the Lancashire club.

Rochdale’s 1-0 victory at home to Charlton Athletic ensured their survival on the final day of the regular season. Their victory condemned Oldham Athletic to relegation. Oldham drew 2-2 with Northampton, who also go down.

Gillingham thrashed Plymouth Argyle 5-2 to end the visitors’ slim chance of leapfrogging Charlton into the final play-off position. Elliott List scored his first two goals for Gillingham in their rout.

In League Two, a goalless draw for Morecambe at Coventry was enough to keep them in the Football League at the expense of Barnet.

Barnet did all they could, beating relegated Chesterfield 3-0 thanks to goals from John Akinde, Richard Brindley and Alex Nicholls, but they also needed Morecambe to lose. With Coventry knowing a point would guarantee them a place in the play-offs, the match ended 0-0.

Lincoln clinched the final play-off place with a 1-1 draw against Yeovil.

Jordan Green scored a 10th-minute opener for Yeovil. Matt Green had a penalty saved for Lincoln but Tom Pett eased the nerves with a 77th-minute equaliser.
