England man marking

- By Sam Dean

Jordan Pickford

Did well to even get a hand to Saul’s opener, helpless for Spain’s second. Encouraged and berated his defenders equally.

6

Joe Gomez

Clearly not out of his depth at this level, but Southgate will need to him to be tighter in possession. Launched into naive first-half challenge.

6

John Stones

Sets the tone when England have the ball but found things harder as Spain dictated the tempo. Wrongly booked for a fine recovery tackle.

6

Harry Maguire

Created a chance for Kane with a trademark towering header. His linking with Stones is still England’s best way of moving the ball into midfield.

6

Kieran Trippier

Late challenge on Alonso summarised England’s struggles but his delivery remains dangerous. Provides a valuable out-ball for the back three.

6

Jesse Lingard

Disappointingly quiet as Spain dominated midfield. Unable to make darting runs but did well to pick out Rashford with an excellent cross.

5

Jordan Henderson

Consistently under pressure as he was hounded by the Spanish attackers. Generally tidy but occasionally guilty of forcing the forward pass.

5

Dele Alli

Overcooked a pass to Kane after a powerful run, and would have liked to have seen more of the ball. Could not get close enough to Kane.

5

Luke Shaw

Wonderful cross to create Rashford’s opener was a sign of his confidence, although reckless at times. Carried off after a worrying blow to the head.

6

Marcus Rashford

Scored with virtually his first touch of the game and provided the direct threat that hurt Spain. Denied a second by a brilliant save from De Gea.

7

Harry Kane

Still not at his sharpest. Delayed when the ball fell to him in the first half and allowed Rodrigo to sneak in front for the Spanish second

Subs

Danny Rose (for Shaw, 53 min) Eric Dier (for Henderson, 64 min) Danny Welbeck
