the lead just before half-time with a try by Nathan Hughes and Searle’s penalty, Exeter’s ability to regain control at the start of the second half ultimately proved decisive.

“We probably could have squeezed the game a bit better at the end of the second half, but we did grab hold of the game after half-time, and that is what we asked from them,” said Exeter’s attack coach Ali Hepher.

“There were a couple of times that we went a little bit off-script – not to say that we are scripted at all, our game plan is very complex and we have important decisions to make across that.

“It is the [perfect start] in terms of points scored, but we don’t really look for that, we look at performance. Last week, our performance level was very high and the challenge this week was whether we would turn up with the same attitude or use it as a comfort blank and chill out this week.

“The pleasing thing is that our attitude was right. We were in the right frame of mind to fight and scrap for everything, but we could just dust up on some of the things that we do.”

For Young, the defeat exposed his side’s inability to finish their chances because of their passing accuracy. “It was not quite good enough to nail them, but when they got opportunities, they scored, and we are not quite as ruthless as them at this moment in time.
