Mendy urged to revive career
Pep Guardiola has challenged Benjamin Mendy to maintain his current levels of fitness and professionalism and resurrect his faltering career with Manchester City. The full-back has started just 14 league games in a little over two years, the result primarily of a series of debilitating injuries. But Mendy has also drawn criticism from Guardiola for his antics off the field and on social media, leading to question marks over his long-term future at the club. Ahead of today’s game against Bournemouth, Guardiola said: “If Benjamin is fit he will have success. I am happy [with him] but I don’t want to say too much. The people from Barcelona are telling me that he is working incredible, like an animal, and hopefully he can maintain that because it is not about one day or week. It is about every day doing that.”
Giggs: Academy set-up is flawed
Ryan Giggs has accused the British academy system of letting youngsters down and believes their development would benefit from being pitted against grown men. Giggs made his Manchester United debut at the age of 17 and went on to play a record 963 games for the club in a 24-year senior career. But Giggs says the academy system leaves British youngsters trailing their continental counterparts. “You see with some of the teams we play what they’ve been through,” Giggs said. “They have robustness and have minutes under their belt. We’ve got the academy system, under-23s, and young players are not playing enough games. When I was 16, I was playing against men [in the reserves].”
Zidane bitter over Madrid defeat
Zinedine Zidane said his Real Madrid side “deserved more” after they dropped points in a 1-1 home draw against Real Valladolid. “It left a bitter taste in my mouth,” the Real coach said. “It’s hard when you know that you deserved more.”
