Since Purdey, our much-loved 12-year-old German pointer, died, we’ve been thinking about getting another dog. However, our two 14-year-old cats seem much more relaxed and confident in Purdey’s absence. We don’t want to upset their newfound tranquillity. What do you think?

Cats can live into their 20s these days, so you could be dogless for many years to come. The alternative is to choose a dog with a history of being cat-friendly, and create spaces where your cats can relax without fear of a dog annoying them (try installing a cat tree from cattree.uk).

My girlfriend insists on using baby wipes to clean the rear of our French bulldog, Monique, after she does her business on walks. I feel this is unnecessary. What’s your opinion?

This would only be recommended if a dog had a medical problem (such as bowel disease or paralysis), or other issue (eg long, fine fur) that led to “traces” in this area. Most dogs don’t need it, but it’s a personal choice.

WHAT IF YOU FALL OR BECOME ILL?

The Animalone Card and key tag (£3.50, theanimalarm.com) carries a message for emergency personnel to contact your family or friends to care for your pet should you become ill or injured.
