We are moving house soon, and I am worried about the impact on Simba, our threeyear-old Maine coon cat. He’s indoor only, and he loves his home. How can I avoid upsetting him with the change of location? PM, GRIMSBY

View your new place from a cat’s perspective. Bring all of Simba’s furnishings, placed in a familiar orientation to give him a sense of “home”. Get him a “cat tree” (cattree.uk), to use vertical space: he’ll enjoy sitting at the top, surveying his new abode. A few plug-in feline pheromone diffusers (feliway.com) will fill the air with odour-free cat-friendly vapours to help him settle in.

What should I feed my new golden retriever puppy? On one bag, the first ingredient is “chicken by-product meal”. Does that mean ground parts of chicken? Is there a vetapproved complete dry dog food that is human grade with less by-products? TD, CARDIFF

There is no one diet that is perfect for every golden retriever puppy: there are multiple good ways of feeding dogs, despite what believers in niche methods like “raw” or “grain free” might tell you. The ingredients on a bag are legal definitions: to find out what they mean, see pfma.org. uk/faqs/pet-food-ingredients. Nearly all commercial pet food is human-grade, and “by-products” are often loved by dogs, as well as being good for them. Aim to choose a diet that he likes, thrives on, and that’s affordable and convenient for you.

PETS CAN’T LAND SAFELY FALLING FROM A HEIGHT

Warm weather has led to a surge of dogs and cats being injured after falling from windows and balconies. The myth that cats fall safely on their feet may stop owners accepting the painful reality. Keep balcony doors shut, and put screens across windows.
