Keep it clean on the green, says Adrian Clark
The golf course is a fiercely competitive arena: I can’t think of another leisure activity that requires such consideration of what to wear. But for years strict club rules and the patronage of Seventies game-show hosts ensured that the same uniform of pastel polo shirts, V-neck argyle sweaters (often tied around the shoulders) and Rupert-theBear checked trousers prevailed and did little to advance golfing style into the techy 21st century. Until recently. Golf is having a “moment”, and designers, high-street stalwarts and sportswear titans have all brought their A-Game.
If (like me) you are in midlife, it’s time to stop dressing like
The Good Life’s Jerry Leadbetter. High-performance items in advanced fabrications with clean lines and precise detailing are the gamechanger. A new brand that should be on your radar is Castore (castore.com), a premium British sportswear label that launched its first dedicated golfing collection in April this year. Ralph Lauren (ralphlauren.co.uk) has several slick golf collections: RLX, Polo Golf and its line with the former world No 1: Polo Golf x Justin Thomas. All of which have some stellar standout pieces, but the twill waterproof jacket (£260) in the RLX line and the bodywarmer in the Justin Thomas collection are among my favourites. Nike’s latest golf shoe, the React Vapor 2, should be on your wishlist, bridging the gap between function and style, and they also make a mean golf glove.
