Stay in and be snug, by

-

Acosy weekend-in need not mean dressing like a slob; you can embrace comfy style and keep it dapper. One of my favoured ways to relax is to don a T-shirt or cashmere knit and pyjama pant combo. This is also ( just about) acceptable should you receive an unexpected caller.

The trick to getting this pared-down look right is in the choice of trouser fabric (give novelty prints a wide berth), and the fit of the T-shirt. A few brands have mastered this “staycation” approach: top of my list is the White Company, who offer elegant drawstring-waisted trousers in soft flannel and a stellar range of jersey basics which feel like cotton wool to wear, as well as a mean pair of piped edge navy cotton pyjamas.

I’m a big fan of pyjamas: I often wear them as separates, the pyjama shirt with a tailored sweat-pant or the bottoms with a merino sweater. Vintage-look plaid pyjamas by the US giant LL Bean are much to be desired.

Robes are a great way to keep snug but not restricted; Gap has a lumberjack check, and M&S Collection has a velvet-touch, but the best – in my view – are from a covetable range by Cleverly Laundry, founded by Amelia McPhee and Roshana Lewis, with a shawl collar and cut from striped terry cotton.

Footwear: thankfully there are now slipper/ casual shoe hybrids; check out Nordic brand Mahabis for chic styles in felt, and the collaboration between slipper specialist Mulo and loungewear supremo Hamilton and Hare.

Pour yourself a hot toddy, light a relaxing candle, and just hope that somebody may drop by. After all, you have gone to quite some effort.
