Never has it felt more necessary to show our appreciation of great British design and craftsmanship. Take Grenson, the Northants maker of shoes and boots (founded 1874): designer Tim Little took over in 2010, and this month it launches its first vegan range, made from microfibres that mimic natural cowhide. And look at Tricker’s, who have designed and made all of its products in England since 1796.

Peregrine is a one-stop shop for outdoorsy, fit-forfunction essentials: the Hudson aran sweater is a staple classic. Of more modern heritage is MG Rivers, based in the Cotswolds, injecting colour into British sporting styles with soft Merino yarns.

Watches: Larsson & Jennings makes its in Switzerland (a bit of a fait accompli), but its roots are in British soil, being the brainchild of entrepreneur Andrew Jennings. Minimalist design, affordability and fastidious commitment to fine quality materials are their hallmarks. Hamilton And Hare is home to fantastic underwear; check out the limited-edition boxers. For grooming, head to Cowshed’s relaunched male-care line, Neville.

Two British designers who understand the concept of real clothes for real men are Margaret Howell (very good at shirts) and Oliver Spencer, king of casual/ formal jackets and who cuts a mean trouser. Stop press: Mackintosh has a new collaboration with artist Mr Slowboy, to answer the question: “What would a modern-day renaissance man, wandering the streets of Bloomsbury, wear today?”
