HANG A PICTURE GALLERY

HOW DIFFICULT IS IT?

“Creating a gallery wall is a fun way to play the role of curator,” says Georgia Spray, founder of Partnership Editions. “Think about how your artworks interact with each other – thematic, colour pairings, or composition. You’ll discover connections that you didn’t know existed.”

HOW TO DO IT:

“Choose pieces that have a conversation in some way, but don’t get too worried about whether the frames match or not,” says Spray. “Then lay them on the floor to get an idea of composition.”

If the pieces are uniform in style, “you can be freer with the layout but if you have a mix of media, colour, size and frames, aim for the same distance on one axis between the works to tie them together”. You may want to cut and stick pieces of paper to the wall to keep the spacing. When it’s time to hang, “start with your most central bottom work and work outwards”, adds Spray.

If your picture doesn’t already have a D-ring with wire, fix this on first. Then, measuring where you need your nail or picture hook, hammer it into place. Check if you’re hammering into a masonry wall (in which case you might need to drill a pilot hole), cavity wall or plasterboard and research the best method. Larger works may need a couple of nails/hooks. Spray recommends command strips as a hole-free solution for light artworks.
