Bearing fruit: the drink that can help ward off flu and boost your immunity

Elderberry syrup

Use the juice of elderberri­es (either from 1.8kg fresh berries boiled and pulped for five minutes with two tablespoon­s of water and then strained; or bought ready-made juice).

Simmer for 10 minutes with chosen spices (cinnamon, cloves, ginger, star anise).

Strain out the spices and add 12oz of sugar or honey per pint of liquid, then stir over a low heat to dissolve. Bottle. Drink 10-20ml as a dose daily with hot water.

Who says Lockdown 3 is not the best time to hit the bottle? Elderberry syrup has been proven to have positive benefits on the immune system
