Dressing for Britain

A splash of colour from an eco-conscious brand can brighten the mood as we leave hibernation

-

David Hockney once said, “I prefer living in colour,” which explains the energy I always find from his work. I prefer dressing in colour. Colour can be exciting, empowering and reviving, whether emanating from a room (I have a pink kitchen), a painting, a plate of food or the changing seasons. Just as the artist projects a certain feeling and thus evokes a response in the audience, I like to think we, too, project ourselves through the clothing choices we make. In short, our choice of colour in an outfit can be a projection of how we feel and we can manipulate this message according to the scenario. Think about that smart navy suit for an interview. A pretty pink dress for a wedding. A red lipstick for a confidence-boosting video call. We can use colour in crafty ways we may not even be aware of. For some this is easy, for others it becomes a lifelong conundrum. Today’s brand might just help simplify things for you.

I’ve thrown a range together to prove how colour can catch the eye and lift the spirits. Of course, I am not suggesting you wear all of these together (though it would make tomorrow’s first school run in months a sight to behold), but Colorful Standard, today’s brand, has created such a wonderful (35-strong) palette that the “more is more” approach was the only way to do it justice. Founded in 2018, this is a brand using the simplicity of single-colour garments to promote timeless, long-lasting fashion. “We don’t care much for seasons or trends,” says Danish founder Tue Deleuran. “We are more into timeless classics. Our pieces are here for the long run. They are sustainable, colourful and uncomplicated.” An astute businessman (and nice guy with zero entourage), Deleuran owns the brand and also his own factory in Portugal, thereby offering full transparency of supply chain.

Colorful Standard is a unisex brand free of embellishment and patterns. The only detail is in the lengths the design team at Copenhagen HQ go to, creating the purest (eco-friendly) dyes, in fantastically rich tones. Everyone will find a colour they love. I counted eight different shades of green alone.

Working different hues into your wardrobe is not always easy, so a few ideas. If you are conscious of your
