MAN FREED AFTER NEARLY 30 YEARS ON DEATH ROW

A man who spent nearly 30 years on Alabama’s death row walked free two days after prosecutor­s acknowledg­ed that the only evidence they had against him couldn’t prove he committed the crime.

Ray Hinton was 29 when he was arrested for two 1985 killings. Freed on Friday evening at age 58, he was embraced by his sisters as he left Jefferson County Jail.

Hinton had won a new trial last year after the US Supreme Court ruled that his trial counsel was inadequate.

MALAYSIAN MP DIES IN HELICOPTER CRASH

A helicopter crashed south of Kuala Lumpur yesterday with all six people on board, including a key political ally of the Malaysian prime minister Najib Razak, believed to be dead.

The helicopter crashed into a rubber plantation in the town of Semenyih with Jamaluddin Jarjis, a MP and a senior member of Najib’s political party, aboard.

JONI MITCHELL SHOWS SIGNS OF IMPROVEMEN­T

Joni Mitchell’s condition was improving at a Los Angeles hospital last night, according to the folk legend’s website.

The 71-year-old Canadian singer-songwriter was found unconsciou­s on Tuesday afternoon in her home and taken to intensive care.

“We are encouraged by her progress and she continues to improve each day,” the website said.

Doris Day made a very rare public appearance in Carmel, California on Friday, as she celebrated her 91st birthday. “I’m overwhelme­d by the love and support from so many dear fans, who send such touching cards and letters,” the actress said.
