Possible contenders tipped to take over the top job

-

5 /1

CHUKA UMUNNA Age: 37 One of the most vocal Labour voices for the Remain campaign and a former shadow business secretary. He put his hat in the ring during the last leadership contest but withdrew amid concerns about the pressure on his family.

8/1

TOM WATSON Age: 49 The deputy leader of the Labour party has worked hard to keep MPs happy under Jeremy Corbyn’s leadership and many want to see him stand. But sources close to him say he has already ruled it out.

8/1

JOHN MCDONNELL Age: 64 The shadow chancellor is a close friend of Jeremy Corbyn and many see him as the most likely to take over in a leadership contest, as part of a pact between the two men. He is not, however, popular with parliamentary colleagues.

DAN JARVIS Age: 43 The former Army major was shadow foreign affairs minister, having been elected in 2011. Quietly confident, the bookies’ favourite has the broad appeal needed to be successful, according to colleagues. But would grass roots members back him?

ANGELA EAGLE Age: 55 The shadow business secretary is being touted as a possible caretaker leader. She performed well during the EU referendum debate, according to colleagues, and would likely win enough support to get on the ballot paper.

12 /1

SIR KEIR STARMER Age: 53 The former Director of Public Prosecutions and head of the Crown Prosecution Service is arguably the most well-qualified public servant in the running. He is liked by colleagues, viewed as sensible and calm, but was only elected as an MP in 2015.

22 /1

STEPHEN KINNOCK Age: 46 The son of former Labour leader Neil Kinnock, Stephen is no stranger to high office. His wife is the former Danish Prime Minister Helle Thorning-Schmidt. He is ambitious and competent but also only became an MP last year, winning the seat in Aberavon.

25 /1

HEIDI ALEXANDER Age: 41 Her odds aren’t great but Heidi Alexander is the dark horse. Mentioned repeatedly by MPs across the party the shadow health secretary is seen as a sensible, inclusive option and her selection would please many female MPs.
