Cameron rewards Remain campaigners in resignation honours
DAVID CAMERON is set to lavish knighthoods and other honours on prominent campaigners who sought to remain in the EU, as well as Tory donors and personal aides.
A leak of the former prime minister’s resignation honours reveals that four Cabinet ministers – Philip Hammond, Michael Fallon, David Lidington and Patrick McLoughlin – are all in line for knighthoods, while George Osborne is set to be become a companion of honour.
Knighthoods have also been requested for two significant Tory donors who between them have given £3million to the Conservatives and the Remain campaign, according to documents leaked to the Sunday Times. They are the businessmen Ian Taylor and Andrew Cook.
Other pro-EU campaigners Mr Cameron has asked to be rewarded are Caroline Spelman, the former cabinet minister, and Sir John Major’s former chief of staff Arabella Warburton, both of whom are in line to be made dames.
An OBE has been requested for Thea Rogers, close aid to George Osborne, while Will Straw, who directed the campaign to stay in the EU and is son of veteran Labour politician Jack Straw, is on the list for an CBE.
Names of more than 20 of Mr Cameron’s close Downing Street circle appear, including Isabel Spearman, his wife Samantha’s stylist, for whom an OBE has been requested.
