When asked for his advice to anyone who had not yet seen a classical orchestra at work, he said it was not only “infinitely cheaper and easier” to get tickets than for other musical genres, but was also potentiall­y life-changing.

“Put down your iPhone, put down your laptop, challenge yourself to really get into this symphony,” he said. “Be challenged for 45 minutes and see what happens to your mental space, because it will be unforgetta­ble.”

Buckley is also staging the Kamasi Washington Prom on Aug 30 with the string section of the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra.
