Hard-wired for hurling stones at the sea

-

SIR – My young nephew returned from the beach having had a most enjoyable time. He and his brother, he said, had spent an hour throwing stones into water – both rock pools and the sea.

Time and again I see boys and young men rushing to throw stones into water. Why do they do it? It seems to me a mindless occupation. Perhaps the urge is linked to an instinct for hunting and fishing. Linda Beskeen Redruth, Cornwall
