Easing rail congestion

SIR – Sally Lawton (Letters, August 14) and M L Simmons (Letters, August 7) don’t seem to understand that a railway service which stops everywhere en route will never be high-speed.

HS2, about which I am ambivalent, is designed to increase capacity and so relieve congestion on the current network for trains (freight as well as passenger) between London, the Home Counties, the Midlands, the North and Scotland.

One of its biggest failings is that it no longer seems likely to connect with HS1 and Eurostar. T J Hosker Rugby, Warwickshire
