NHS expenses

SIR – The NHS is not free (Letters, August 14).

My mother is 86 and in a care home, but she has been declared fit to travel by her GP. She makes regular trips to the hospital, and each time has to pay £9 for a taxi plus £10 for someone to assist her. Steve Cattell Grantham, Lincolnshire
