A MOTHER has described the devastating decision to turn off her daughter’s life support after the four-year-old was pulled unconscious from a swimming pool during a family holiday.

Blossom Iris Kelly died on Thursday in hospital after being pulled from the pool at a rural home near the Spanish town of Sils at around 6pm on Sunday.

The family, from Skelmersdale, Lancashire, had been on a summer holiday to celebrate the 60th birthday of Blossom’s grandfather.

It is understood Blossom had been swimming in the pool before the incident but an investigation into the circumstances of her death is still taking place, Spanish media reported.

Emergency services are believed to have attended the scene before the child was airlifted to Hospital Josep Trueta in nearby Girona.

She was transferred to Vall d’Hebron University Hospital, Barcelona, in critical condition.

“Our beautiful Blossom Iris Kelly lost her fight at 12.45pm this afternoon,” Ms Kelly said on Thursday in a Facebook post. “She put on the most amazing battle but her little body was tired and we had to make the most difficult decision of our lives and let her go and she chose to go today on her daddy’s birthday.”

Ms Kelly, who has two other children, said: “Words cannot describe how we as a family are feeling right now but it hurts so bad.

“Telling my kids that their sister had gone was the worst thing I have ever had to do. God knows what we are going to do without the most gorgeous little character in the world. She was my best mate and I’m going to miss her so, so much. Goodbye princess, love you always.”

Hayley Thomas, Blossom’s aunt, also wrote on the site. “One of the hardest days of my life today, we lost our beautiful, wild funny little Blossy,” she said.

“You, your mum and dad fought till Blossom Iris Kelly, right, aged four, from Skelmersdale in Lancashire, was on holiday with her family in Spain when she died ‘God knows what we are going to do without the most gorgeous little character in the world. I’m going to miss her so much’ the bitter end but it wasn’t meant to be. I have never witnessed such strength. I am so proud of my brother and sister in-law.

“Life will never be the same without you, gorgeous girl, but we are all so thankful for the four and half years we got with you!

“We are going to celebrate you and remember the great memories we have of you, our precious flower. Love you forever Blossom Iris Kelly, from your fairy godmother.”

An earlier post suggested Blossom was improving ahead of a scheduled MRI scan on August 23, which was postponed until the day of her death.

“Blossy has not had the MRI scan today as there were other people who needed it more urgently but she will have it tomorrow at some point,” her mother wrote.

“She has had several other tests through the day and has shown slight improvements in them and is reacting to things when she doesn’t like them which are all good signs.

“Her bloods have started to improve too so we are all keeping super focused and extremely positive. Thank you so much for all your prayers and wishes and energy.”

On Monday Aug 22, Ms Kelly wrote of the “tragic accident” and praised the hospital staff.

“She is fighting every step of the way and we are here with her fighting too,” Ms Kelly said. “Can’t explain the pain and heartache we have felt over the past 24 hours but we are staying positive and only letting good thoughts in.

“She is in the best hospital with nurses and doctors who are real angels. Thanks all for your messages please keep praying for her.”

Relations, friends and people who have been touched by Blossom’s story have changed their Facebook profile pictures to pink flowers in tribute to the four-year-old, the reported.

The Foreign and Commonwealth Office said it was offering assistance.
