Faisal al-Saadoon and Khalaf Mufdhi
Articles of 16 Oct referred to reports that Faisal al-Saadoon and Khalaf Mufdhi, Iraqi nationals accused of murdering two British soldiers and handed over to the Iraqi authorities for trial, were each awarded £75,000 in damages by the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) for “mental suffering” caused by the threat of the death penalty. In fact, although the ECHR gave judgment partially in their favour and awarded them €40,000 in costs, it awarded no sum in damages. We are happy to make this clear.
