In defence of carbs

-

SIR – I applaud David Barnett’s positive attitude after being diagnosed prediabetic, and his weight loss (Letters, October 15). However, eliminating all carbohydrates is rather drastic. There is a big difference between avoiding empty calories – such as those in sugary drinks – and a zero-tolerance attitude to carbohydrates.

Complex carbohydrates are essential. Eaten sensibly, brown rice, quinoa, wholewheat pasta and artisan stoneground bread all contribute to good health. It is better to lose weight gradually, without depriving the body of a necessary food category. Christine Hartridge Hambledon, Hampshire
