Slipshod cyclists

-

SIR – We learn all too frequently of the tragedies of cyclists who are fatally injured. However, I would also like to draw attention to the huge number of cyclists who consider themselves to have priority over fellow users of our public highways – ignoring red traffic lights, pedalling straight through crossings and cycling on pavements, causing danger to pedestrians.

Any motorised vehicle using our public highways has to be annually insured, taxed and declared roadworthy. Their drivers must have passed the required test.

Special cycle lanes have been created for cyclists (at no monetary cost to them); why do they still not have the same legal and financial responsibilities as car drivers, who endure an ever-increasing financial burden while also witnessing some terrifying two-wheeled manoeuvres and very unfriendly gestures?
