Don’t trash cyclists

- Mike Nichols Earls Barton, Northamptonshire

SIR – Simon Heffer’s claim (April 16) that much of the littering in country lanes is carried out by cyclists is unfair.

Does he really think that cyclists who are keeping fit and enjoying the countryside would spread the sort of litter that I see in my local hedgerows?

Typically, one can spot the remnants of fast food packaging, coffee cups, empty drink cans and bottles. In addition, there is the fly-tipping of builder’s waste, tree and hedge trimmings, the odd car tyre and a refrigerator. It is hard to picture how a cyclist might carry any of these items.
