Today’s radio choice Charlotte Runcie
The Documentary WORLD SERVICE, 2.06PM
The glittering metropolis of Las Vegas is laid out before us to explore in this documentary, guided by local limo driver Adele Edelman through a parade of casino hosts, showgirls and Elvis-themed wedding officiants. There’s also a look back at how “America’s Playground” grew from a tiny oasis in the Nevada desert, founded in 1905, to the enormous, brightly lit city it is today, through days of mob rule and reinvention to its modern incarnation, including asking what it’s like for the people who live there full-time.
Austentatious RADIO 4, 7.15PM
The perennially successful cult comedy show at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe comes to Radio 4. The premise is the same for every performance, but every performance is different: it’s a long-form improvised “lost” Jane Austen novel, cooked up using devised titles from the live audience, and performed by a troupe of Austen fans who have no idea what they’re going to perform before they arrive on stage. With previous titles including Mansfield Shark and Strictly Come Darcy, the result is pure silliness.
