Trump aims for Camp David moment to fight extremism

- By Nick Allen in Washington

PRESIDENT Donald Trump may host a Camp David-style summit in an attempt to ease tensions between US allies in the Arab world.

Mr Trump was said to be considering inviting those allies to the US in the wake of his speech in Riyadh last month calling for them to do more to combat extremism.

The disclosure came after a group of Arab countries led by Saudi Arabia and Egypt imposed an economic and diplomatic blockade on Qatar over allegations of supporting extremist ideology.

The US, which has 10,000 troops and the key Al Udeid air base in Qatar, has called for a de-escalation of the crisis.

In 1978 the Camp David Accords were signed by Egyptian President Anwar Sadat and Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin following nearly two weeks of secret talks at the presidential retreat in Maryland.

A White House official told Fox News: “It’s a Camp David moment. We’ve seen nothing like this in 40 years and now the president wants to follow through.

“The president wants to bring all the key players to Washington. They need to disavow groups like the Muslim Brotherhood for the stability of the Middle East at large. It’s not just about Qatari elements funding the Brotherhood but disavowing support for extremism in general.”

White House officials said they believed a summit would help to reinvigorate US alliances weakened under the Obama administration.
