Oxford treasurer arrested after US murder
in Maine and in New York
AN OXFORD UNIVERSITY treasurer has been arrested in California after eight days on the run from police, following the murder of a 26-year old man in Chicago.
Andrew Warren was arrested along with Wyndham Lathem, an associate professor of microbiology and immunology at Northwestern University in Chicago.
Mr Warren, 56, and Prof Lathem, 42 were sought by police after Trenton Cornell-Duranleau, a hair stylist, was found stabbed to death in Prof Lathem’s high-rise flat in Chicago.
The two men were seen on surveillance footage leaving the building on July 27, after Cornell-Duranleau is thought to have been killed. An anony- mous caller reached the front desk of the building around 8.30pm that same day and alerted the authorities.
Mr Warren walked into the San Francisco police department’s Park District station alone at 6.30pm on Friday and surrendered.
Prof Lathem surrendered in Oakland, 10 miles away, and is scheduled for a 9am court appearance tomorrow in San Francisco. It was not clear when Mr Warren would be called.
Anthony Guglielmi, spokesman for Chicago police, confirmed that, hours before their arrest, Prof Lathem “sent an apologetic video message to friends and family for involvement in the murder of Trenton Cornell”.
A senior treasury assistant at Somerville College, Mr Warren left the home he shared with his sister in Faringdon, Oxfordshire, on June 24 for his first ever visit to the US. He was reported missing to Thames Valley Police by his sister, Tracey, and his partner, Martin Grant.
Authorities are attempting to piece together the relationship between Mr Warren and Prof Lathem.
Prof Lathem and Cornell-Duranleau were involved in some sort of relationship and had “some type of falling out,” said Mr Guglielmi.
