Ex-MP Proctor urges abuse police inqury
THE police watchdog has been asked to investigate the role of Scotland Yard detectives who helped a sex abuse fantasist submit an allegedly fraudulent compensation claim.
A man known only as “Nick” received thousands of pounds from the Criminal Injuries Compensation Authority after claiming he had been raped and abused by a VIP paedophile ring when he was a child.
On the back of the allegations the Metropolitan Police launched the Operation Midland inquiry. But before the investigation was even complete, detectives working on the case supported Nick’s application for compensation and even helped him to fill in the forms.
Now one of those accused by Nick has asked the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) to investigate the officers’ role in the claim, after prosecutors confirmed they were considering bringing charges against Nick for alleged fraud and perverting the course of justice.
Harvey Proctor, the former Tory MP, who lost his home and job after being falsely accused of rape, abuse and even murder, said as the compensation claim might constitute a criminal offence, it was vital the police officers who helped submit it were formally investigated by the watchdog.
He told The Sunday Telegraph: “It has always been my view that the Metropolitan Police were supporting Nick in more than one way. The fact that they assisted with his compensation claim just goes to illustrate that point. I have written to the IPCC to ask that these two officers and their supervisors are investigated.”
