SIR – Molly Kiniry (Com­ment, Septem­ber 10) makes an ex­cel­lent point about the im­por­tance of tol­er­ance.

She is wrong, how­ever, about the Pil­grim Fathers. Mas­sachusetts was founded so they could have a state where theirs was the only form of re­li­gion. They al­lowed no dis­sent at all and were even more in­tol­er­ant than the English monar­chy.

She should have re­ferred to the founders of Mary­land or Penn­syl­va­nia for ex­am­ples of tol­er­ant at­ti­tudes towards dis­sent. David Paul
