SIR – On a re­cent visit to our son and fam­ily in the Cotswolds, my wife and I no­ticed sev­eral posters for the “Stately Car Boot Sale”.

Hav­ing es­tab­lished that there is no lo­cal vil­lage called Stately, I can only as­sume that word refers to the qual­ity of items for sale – per­haps an un­known Con­sta­ble or a piece of Chip­pen­dale. John Hop­kin­son
