SIR – On a recent visit to our son and family in the Cotswolds, my wife and I noticed several posters for the “Stately Car Boot Sale”.

Having established that there is no local village called Stately, I can only assume that word refers to the quality of items for sale – perhaps an unknown Constable or a piece of Chippendale. John Hopkinson
