Paddington (2014)

CHANNEL 4, 5.15PM ★★★★

This is as warm and welcome as a hot pair of socks on a winter morning. The bear from Darkest Peru is brought beautifully to life by Ben Whishaw and the digital artists at visual effects house Framestore. Hugh Bonneville and Sally Hawkins are terrific as Paddington’s guardians Mr and Mrs Brown. Look out for a very game Nicole Kidman as a fanatical taxidermist. The sequel is out on Friday.

October: 10 Days That Shook the World (1928, b/w)

BBC FOUR, 8.00PM ★★★★

This Sergei Eisenstein classic, commissioned by the Soviet government to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the Revolution, recreates the events that led to the storming of the Winter Palace in October 1917. Its propagandist images, edited with Eisenstein’s typical rhythmic montage, led to a ban, with the first screenings in Britain not until 1935.

Louis Theroux: My Scientology Movie (2015)

BBC TWO, 9.00PM ★★★★

Louis Theroux versus the Church of Scientology. It’s a near-irresistible contest: the face of deadpan scepticism, up against that many-headed hydra of indecipherable rage. Twice Theroux loiters at Gold Base, the church’s compound in California, and gets in contretemps with a human guard dog, which reach Pythonesque heights of gleeful weirdness: he milks these showdowns for all they’re worth.
