Mother with not a wrinkle in town

-

It’s silly, really, that I still think that mothers should be less glamorous than their daughters when so many of my friends are now mothers and beautifully glam with it. I suppose it comes down to my own experience – not yet a mother myself, I still work off the template set by my mum.

We were different breeds: she harried, without makeup, and not a hint of conscious va-va voom; I am quite vain and keen on looking good. Her job has always been to tell me I am beautiful, and she has never included herself in that equation. (A refrain of hers is that I am far prettier than she ever was – which is completely false). The result is that, to me, the natural order is that daughters (adult ones, anyway) ought to out-glam their mothers.

So with Reese Witherspoon and daughter in town for the premiere last week of A Wrinkle in Time,

I couldn’t help but feel a bit freaked out. Witherspoon is an undeniably beautiful and glamorous 41, and Ava, her daughter, a very pretty 18-yearold, as you’d expect of the product of two Hollywood A-listers (her dad is actor Ryan Phillippe). But that the two are neck and neck in the desirability stakes is disconcerting.

I’m sure Reese is a great mother, but I for one would find it weird for my own to be wrinkle-free and perfectly toned and clad.
