Theresa May has thwarted Brexit, betraying the referendum majority

-

SIR – The tragicomedy of the Brexit negotiations has taken another lurch down the road towards capitulation.

I believed I lived in a democratic country. What a fool I was! Instead we have an influential minority convinced they know better than the public what is best for them. They worked tirelessly to thwart the result of the 2016 referendum. When a minority sets out to defeat the will of the majority we have taken a step towards a dictatorship (and I never dreamt I would ever use those words in reference to this country).

Thersea May has promised much, but has rolled over at the least whiff of a threat from the Brussels bureaucrats. Perhaps that’s because at heart she is a bureaucrat herself. Where is the leader to inspire Britons to work towards a brighter future? I wish I knew. Alan Moore

SIR – If those Cabinet members true to the party’s election manifesto are silenced, this is not Brexit in Name Only. It is Remain in All But Name. Michael Hely Banham, Norfolk SIR – No Brexit. No democracy. No confidence. David Blackwell Chesterfield, Derbyshire SIR – Betrayal means Betrayal. Clare Paul Tadworth, Surrey

SIR – So that’s it then. The Government is to sell the electorate down the river.

Over the months we have read dire warnings about what this would mean for democracy, that there would be a huge “backlash”. No one has described quite how this might manifest itself.

Well, it’s happened. What are we supposed to do now? Justice Hawkins

SIR – Theresa May was and still is a Remainer. She is completely ignoring what people voted for in the referendum. I have voted for the Conservatives from the first time I qualified to vote. My next vote will be for Ukip as it will be with many thousands more. Anthony Carling

SIR – When Theresa May offers the EU half a hog they are sure to insist on the whole hog. We will become rule-takers rather than rule-makers. As an example in farming: when, as seems likely, the EU bans glyphosate we will no longer be permitted to import grain from outside the EU, as it will not longer meet EU regulations. The EU will turn the UK into a vassal state. Patrick Cooke

SIR – It appears our sole hope of Brexit now resides in Michel Barnier saying “Non”. Bob Vass
