How to Train Your Dragon 2 (2014) CBBC, 10.25AM ★★★

This follow-up to the 2010 original brings the thrill of video games to the cinema: its rich fantasy landscapes are begging to be explored. The plot, about a gang of dragon-trappers who invade the Vikings’ kingdom, doesn’t quite join up the neat dramatic moments, and the animators cut between shots when you’d rather soak in the view. And yet, whenever the film is allowed to fly, it really does soar. Jay Baruchel as Gerard Butler star.

Father of the Bride (1991) E4, 4.50PM ★★★

Steve Martin stars in this fluffy but fun remake of Vincente Minnelli’s 1950 comedy drama, playing an anxious businessman who has to dig deep to fund his beloved daughter’s dream wedding. Diane Keaton sparkles as his wife, but it’s Martin Short who steals the show with his flamboyant portrayal of a wedding organiser who grapples with ice sculptures, swans and surprise snowstorms.

10 Rillington Place (1971) BBC TWO, 11.30PM; SCOT, MIDNIGHT; NOT WALES ★★★★★

Richard Fleischer’s crime drama is based on the real-life case of serial killer John Christie (Richard Attenborough), who brutally murdered many of his victims in his London terraced home, and the miscarriage of justice that saw his neighbour, Timothy Evans (John Hurt), wrongfully executed for the crimes. Attenborough gives a thoroughly compelling performance in this grimly absorbing film.
