Oz the Great and Powerful (2013) BBC ONE, 2.50PM; SCOTLAND, 3.10PM ★★★

In Disney’s Wizard of Oz prequel, James Franco plays a sideshow magician who’s borne by a tornado from sepia-tinted Kansas to a zany wonderland. He’s hailed as the wizard who’ll pacify the kingdom, but the role calls for an elaborate showman and a miscast Franco is half-asleep. Lucky that co-star Mila Kunis is on sprightly form, and director Sam Raimi’s backdrops are gorgeous. Phantom Thread (2017) SKY CINEMA PREMIERE, 8.00PM ★★★★

Paul Thomas Anderson’s exquisite work finds Daniel Day-Lewis (in what he’s since declared his final film) as Reynolds Woodcock, a Fifties couturier with a muse (Vicky Krieps) who’s bad news. Reynolds’s sister Cyril (Lesley Manville) serves as the third point of their rather uneasy domestic triangle. The film is an instant classic, with hints of Alfred Hitchcock but a strangeness all of its own. 5.35 Deepwater Horizon (2016) CHANNEL 4, 9.00PM ★★★★

In 2010, the Deepwater Horizon oil rig exploded in the Gulf of Mexico; it was the biggest environmental disaster in American history. So what the hell happened? Peter Berg’s film points the finger at BP executives, in particular Don Vidrine, John Malkovich’s pursed-lipped, bullying boss. Playing a sturdy everyman engineer, Mark Wahlberg battles the inferno. The shots glow and the sound is spectacular.
