The Muppet Movie (1979) E4, 10.30AM ★★★★

This was the first Muppets film, and it’s still as silly and heartwarming as ever. Kermit (voiced by Jim Henson) and Fozzie Bear (voiced by Frank Oz) bumble their way to Hollywood, assailed by the nefarious Doc Hopper (Charles Durning), and scooping up the whole Muppet crew en route. Should the nostalgia not be enough, the jokes are whip-smart, and there are cameos from Telly Savalas, Orson Welles and more.

War Horse (2011) BBC ONE, 2.20PM ★★★★★

Benedict Cumberbatch and Emily Watson excel in Steven Spielberg’s sprawling First World War epic, which combines Michael Morpurgo’s novel and Nick Stafford’s savvy stage version. It’s about the friendship between a horse called Joey and his trainer Albert; Joey is sold to the war effort, and we follow his journey across Europe. It’s a grand piece of film-making, and a heartbreaking way to start Remembrance Week.

Bobby (2016) BBC TWO, 6.25PM; NOT SCOTLAND/WALES ★★★★

This feature-length documentary, marking the half-centenary of England’s World Cup victory, focuses on the team’s quiet and dignified captain, Bobby Moore. It’s unflinching stuff: we go from that ultimate high into Moore’s marital and financial problems, and his death from cancer aged 51. Geoff Hurst, Greg Dyke and Gordon Banks are among the talking heads who elicit, and themselves shed, more than a few tears.
