Police search back gardens in hunt for missing student

- By Steve Bird and Jack Hardy in Chelmza, Poland

POLICE have begun using specialist cameras fitted on tripods to search back gardens and a field near the home of missing student, Libby Squire.

Officers were seen scouring the area in Hull in the search for the 21-year-old student who vanished more than a week ago following a night out.

After getting a taxi home she was seen sitting alone on a nearby bench before apparently being caught on CCTV climbing into the passenger seat of a car parked just yards away.

Humberside Police were last night granted more time to question Pawel Relowicz, a 24-year-old Polish butcher, who was arrested on Wednesday in Hull where he lives with his wife and two sons. His mother, Marzena Relowicz, has insisted that her son is not capable of hurting anyone, adding that she had heard he had given Miss Squire a lift home. From her home in Poland she said she “knew in her heart” that “he did not do anything to this girl”.

She said she had heard that her son had been driving home and saw a girl crying, before offering her a lift home and apparently putting her details into his satellite navigation system.

She was unsure whether her son, who works at a meat factory in Malton, North Yorkshire, had made extra money working as a taxi driver.

Miss Squire a second year philosophy student at Hull University, had been put into a taxi on Jan 31 after being refused entry to a nightclub. She was dropped off by taxi at her home at 11.29pm and was seen on CCTV 30 minutes later sitting on a nearby bench.

The taxi driver and another motorist who had stopped to help her have been eliminated from the investigation.

CCTV footage from nearby appears to show a man rolling a cigarette by a car before someone gets into the passenger seat. The man then gets into the driver’s side and the vehicle moves off.
