The Man Who Would be King (1975)

BBC TWO, 1.55PM ★★★★★

This rip-roaring adaptation of the Kipling yarn is one of director John Huston’s finest works. Sean Connery and Michael Caine are perfectly cast as a couple of rascally British ex-soldiers whose get-rich-quick scheme to con villagers in Kafiristan out of a fortune in gold takes an unexpected turn. After Connery survives being hit by an arrow, he’s hailed as a god – and decides he quite likes being treated as such.

Star Wars: Episode V – The Empire Strikes Back (1980)

ITV2, 6.25PM ★★★★★

The recent Star Wars films have injected fresh youth and vigour into George Lucas’s franchise, but The Empire Strikes Back remains the space opera’s finest hour. In this instalment, originally the second of three, Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) meets the Jedi master Yoda and learns the shocking truth about villain Darth Vader. FILM4, 9.00PM ★★★★

In May 1942, secret agents Jozef Gabčík (Cillian Murphy) and Jan Kubiš (Jamie Dornan) set out to assassinate SS General Reinhard Heydrich. But Operation Anthropoid – did not go smoothly, with shocking violence and Nazi repercussions. Metro Manila director Sean Ellis did meticulous research; this dark but gripping film could be a documentary. Toby Jones steals the show.
