Serena serves up a doubles team dream for Sir Andy

SIR Andy Murray’s search for a mixed doubles partner at Wimbledon may be over as Serena Williams told him yesterday: “I’m available.”

The Scot, who wants to play in both the mixed and men’s doubles, has been struggling to find a female player to pair up with.

But asked if she would like to partner him yesterday, Williams, the undisputed queen of the grass court, replied: “I’m available. I’m feeling better now so I’m definitely available.

“We will just have to wait and see. Let’s see how my knee’s going.”

Sir Andy was coy when asked about a potential pairing with Williams.

“Obviously, she’s arguably the best player ever,” he said. “It would be a pretty solid pairing.”

When pressed, he added: “I’ve spoken to a number of players. The one thing with the players that are in the singles is that that’s their priority. I understand that.

“If I’m going to play mixed, you obviously want to be playing with someone who’s going to be there for the whole event, and they’re in it to try to win matches and win the event.”

The Telegraph told last week how Sir Andy, who will partner Frenchman Pierre-Hugues Herbert in the men’s doubles, had been turned down by several women for the mixed tournament.

The draw could see him face his older brother, doubles specialist Jamie, in the third round and he admitted that would be “difficult in some respects”.

He added: “I’d rather be on the same side of the net with him.”

One player who has had plenty of experience competing with her sibling is Williams, who offered Sir Andy this advice: “Don’t look at them. Literally look at the ground, don’t look at them at all. Disconnect.”
