Trump ‘inept, incompetent and insecure’, says UK official

- By Greg Wilford

BRITAIN’S Ambassador to Washington has described Donald Trump as “incompetent”, “insecure” and “inept” in a series of memos to Downing Street, it was claimed last night.

Sir Kim Darroch, one of the UK’s top diplomats, reportedly impugned the US president’s character in a series of cables and briefing notes.

He warned that under President Trump, the White House has become “uniquely dysfunctional” and dogged by internal conflict, according to the Mail on Sunday, who claim to have seen the leaked memos.

Sir Kim is also reported to have said that the US leader could have become indebted to “dodgy Russians”.

The claims risk angering President Trump and could undermine the UK’s “special relationship” with the US.

Recent reports have suggested that Sir Kim is due to leave his role, with Sir Mark Sedwill tipped as his successor.

One memo is said to have been sent by Sir Kim to Sir Mark and senior Ministers on June 22 2017 – 150 days into the Trump administration.

It reportedly refers to allegations of collusion between Trump’s team and Russia – since largely disproved – saying: “The worst cannot be ruled out.”

Last night the Foreign Office said the public would “expect our Ambassadors to provide Ministers with an honest, unvarnished assessment of the politics in their countries”.

A spokesman added: “Their views are not necessarily the views of Ministers or … Government. But we pay them to be candid. Our team in Washington have strong relations with the White House and no doubt these will withstand mischievous behaviour.”
