Trump takes aim at Khan following Met Twitter ‘hack’

- By Jessica Carpani

DONALD TRUMP has called Sadiq Khan “incompetent” and claimed London will “never have safe streets” after hackers posted several bizarre tweets from the Metropolitan Police’s account.

The US president attacked Mr Khan in a tweet yesterday that read: “With the incompetent Mayor of London, you will never have safe streets!” The president quoted Right-wing commentator Katie Hopkins’s post which said officers have “lost control of London streets” and “their twitter account too”.

The force denied its IT system was hacked, saying a security issue had affected only its Mynewsdesk account, which it uses to issue news releases.

The abusive and sarcastic posts late on Friday had expressed anti-police sentiments and called for the release of drill rap artist Digga D, including “no comment get my lawyer” and “what you gonna do phone the police?”.

Scotland Yard said the account had “been subject to unauthorised access”. Supt Roy Smith tweeted: “Our media team are working hard to delete the messages and ensure the security of the account. Please ignore any Tweets until we verify that it is back under official control.”

The messages were taken down early yesterday. A force spokesman said there had been no “hack” of its IT infrastructure in the incident. A spokesman said the force was working to establish what happened: “We have begun making changes to our access arrangements to Mynewsdesk.”

Mynewsdesk said it would take “corrective measures”.
