Life in Corbyn’s era
SIR – Janet Daley (Comment, June 28) mentions Jeremy Corbyn’s previous incarnation as chairman of the education committee in Haringey.
I grew up there and remember the Winter of Discontent. Some of our teachers, even the Left-wing ones, did break the strike and teach exam classes in the homes of pupils.
During the Seventies, the schools in the area absorbed a large number of new pupils from successive immigrations, such as refugees from the Biafran War and from the situation in Cyprus. The local poor white population took the changes with surprisingly good grace, and I recall that time with some fondness. There were problems, but everybody’s life mattered then, as it does now.
