Social media stars to spread ‘back to school safely’ slogan

- By Harry Yorke

SOCIAL MEDIA influencers are due to be enlisted by the Government as it this week launches a major campaign to get children back into school in September.

As part of the publicity campaign, newspaper, digital radio and billboard adverts will be published to hammer home the messages that classrooms are Covid-secure.

Meanwhile, schools have received Public Health England approved guidance on protective measures they should implement to keep pupils and teachers safe to reduce the risk of transmission of the coronavirus. They include staggered break times, increased hygiene, and children remaining in so-called “bubbles”.

Last night an Department for Education source said ministers also hoped to secure the support of celebrities and public figures with large followings on social media sites to help communicate

more directly with pupils. The campaign is using the hashtag slogan “backtoschoolsafely” in the hope that it will be shared widely on Twitter.

It’s understood one of those who will be approached is celebrity doctor Ranj Singh, a regular on ITV’s This Morning and known for competing on Strictly Come Dancing.

It comes as the latest statistics published by the Office for National Statistics show that confidence among parents that their children will be able to return to school is rising.

Speaking ahead of the launch, Gavin Williamson, the Education Secretary, said: “I know families are growing more confident that schools and colleges are ready and waiting to get back to teaching, with the right protective measures in place.”

Professor Chris Whitty, the Government’s Chief Medical Officer, added: “Education is essential for a child’s development so it is crucial we get children safely back to school in September.”
