They only want a press if it agrees with their agenda

- By Camilla Tominey ASSOCIATE EDITOR

Extinction Rebellion’s brazen attack on press freedom should worry everyone, regardless of their politics. We already knew that the so-called “progressive Left” believes the silencing of dissenting views is a legitimate campaign tactic.

Feted by the liberal establishment – and even praised by Labour MP Dawn Butler – this cabal of eco-fascists has always believed its rights trump ours.

Yet by limiting public access to news by barricading the UK’s three largest printing presses, XR has finally shown how anti-democratic it actually is. It has become apparent the only press they want is one that always agrees with them.

Until these deluded crusties blocked roads on Friday night we hadn’t fully realised that the police also seem to believe that the ends justify the means.

That Hertfordshire Constabulary felt the need to double down on its support of “the right to peaceful protest” in the wake of 72 arrests tells you everything you need to know about why XR keeps getting away with holding this country to ransom.

We now appear to have entered a parallel universe where the hordes are allowed to flout Covid rules simply by claiming they’re “saving the planet”. We have since discovered that Gail Bradbrook, XR’s co-founder, had the temerity to write her own editorial for a tabloid she later advised her band of civil disobedients to obstruct.

Deep down, even she knows that if it wasn’t for mainstream media, no one would have even heard of her organisation.

As with Black Lives Matter, hardLeft zealots joining XR are more concerned with bringing down capitalism than honouring the founding principles.

How ironic that a group that insists it wants to “place power in the hands of citizens” should take away their fundamental right to read the newspaper of their choice.

Thankfully, the silent majority understands you can never win an argument for free speech by suppressing the free speech of others.

The truth has been freed, and Extinction Rebellion has been found out.
