Voters have spoken on a PM incapable of leading this country through crisis

-

SIR – I am sure it’s just a coincidence that those Conservatives who won in the local elections had made it abundantly clear they wanted nothing to do with Boris Johnson.

People’s standard of living has plummeted, their cost of living has rocketed, and projections suggest that things are going to get worse.

All we get from the Prime Minister are excuses and ridiculous promises – not to mention his egocentric and self-serving behaviour.

SIR – The poor showing of the Conservative Party is easily understood. Voters want the originals, not the tribute band.

SIR – I cannot agree with David Davis (“What we must do to reinvigorate the Conservative Party”, Comment, May 6).

Mid-term local elections are notoriously unreliable as a measure of what people really think. For most, they are simply an opportunity to bash the party in office.

The Government would do better to hold its nerve, in the belief that the policies currently in train will come good in the longer term. Now is not the time for a reset.

SIR – As Tom Harris (Comment, May 6) notes, the local elections have demonstrated that Labour is now just the party of Islington Remainers – and the Prime Minister is not out of touch with the public simply because he hasn’t heard of Lorraine.

Ordinary people are concerned with the bigger picture. Covid was handled as well by this government as any. Britain has shown more courage over Ukraine than most. The Government is attempting to deal with the migrant crisis through offshore processing, a method that has been successful elsewhere. What policies does Labour have on any of these issues? The constant carping from the entitled, predominantly middle-class Left is falling on deaf ears.

SIR – Surely the purpose of local elections is to elect people, who, regardless of their political affiliations, will work together to solve local problems and improve the lives of residents.

Sadly, it seems we have just had a mini general election.
