THE BIG ISSUES

What do you think should be top of the new Prime Minister’s to-do list?

-

This issue will reach our subscribers on Thursday 8 June – election day. Since the general election was announced on 18 April, the political parties have made many promises in their bids to persuade the public to vote for them. By the early hours of 9 June, the British people will know which political party has won and who will be Prime Minister for the next five years. The promises made by the winning party during their campaign, and the decisions they make once they form a government, will shape the future for every one of us.

In a survey launched last month, we asked The Week Junior readers which three jobs they think the prime minister should have at the top of their “to-do” list when they enter 10 Downing Street (the official home of the UK Prime Minister). The results are clear: healthcare, education and the environment.

More than 62% of the readers who have responded so far say that the new PM must make sure that the National Health Service (NHS) has enough money. Education comes a close second; 45% of our readers want the Government to ensure that all young people get a good education and the chance to fulfil their potential. Tackling climate change, improving air quality and protecting our planet are also things that you feel strongly about, with almost 44% saying that the government needs to make more effort to look after the environment.

Next week we’ll compare your concerns with the winning party’s manifesto (the document that is published by each political party in which they set out their intentions) to see how they plan to address the issues you care most about. The survey is still open – share your views at tinyurl.com/TWJ-electionsurvey
