POLITICIAN

-

The first meaning of “politician” was a schemer or plotter in affairs of the polis, an ancient Greek word for city. There are other nicknames, too: a snollygoster, for example, is a 19th century term for a politician who is only interested in themselves. A throttlebottom, meanwhile, is another old name for a bumbling politician who never achieves very much.
